[FYI request #26936 email]
Dear Chris
Thank you for your email dated 22 May 2024 to Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities
requesting the following information under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act).
Are you able to provide the following in excel / table format on Kainga Ora letterhead
a breakdown of the persons across Kainga Ora / Emergency Housing
Total Persons in State Houses broken down as fol ows
•
New Zealand citizens
•
Non New Zealand citizens
Can you then breakdown the Non New Zealand citizens into various groups eg visa
holders and type, refugees & visa status, visa status unknown / pending /
undocumented etc etc just whatever the categories are / might be
Can you also provide the ages of these persons and work status
Kāinga Ora has considered your request under the Act, and has interpreted your request as
asking about public housing, excluding emergency housing, which Kāinga Ora is not
responsible for.
Kāinga Ora only holds information on the residency status of the main tenant in a
household, and not any other household members. Therefore I am declining your request for
the residency status of ‘total persons in state houses’ under section 18(g)(i) of the Act, as the
information is not held, and we do not have grounds for believing it is held by another
agency.
The figures Kāinga Ora holds, provided in the table below, are sourced from information
provided by people when they apply for public housing with the Ministry of Social
Development and are successfully housed by Kāinga Ora. This information is not
subsequently updated, therefore, it may no longer be accurate by the time a person is
placed in a Kāinga Ora home.
The information provided is at 30 April 2024 for those in public homes.

Your request for a breakdown of the information by visa and ‘work status’ is refused under
section 18(g)(i) of the Act, as this information is not held.
