Thank you for your Official Information Act (Act) request received by the Department of Internal 
Affairs (Department) on 16 May 2024.      
You requested –  
  Could you please clarify the rule about the “cut-off date” to a person being allocated to a 
NZ Citizenship Ceremony: e.g. if it is based on “Submission” date of the application or 
“Approval” Date?. 

In response to your request, I can provide you with the following information. 
I can confirm that if a person has been approved for grant of New Zealand citizenship, they will 
be invited to attend the next available ceremony in their area. I note that citizenship applicants 
are allocated to ceremonies in order of approval. Ceremonies are scheduled and run by the 
Council in the region in which the applicant resides. Should an applicant at approved stage wish 
to determine when their ceremony may be taking place, they can email the Department’s 
ceremonies team directly at [email address].
