Dear EVP
Official Informaon Act 24.41 Law Student numbers
I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 30 April 2024 for information relating to Law
student numbers at the University of Canterbury (UC). You have specifical y requested:
•
I would like to request the fol owing information for 2024:
1. The total number of law students who are enrol ed at the university,
2. and 2. The number of law students within each year level from:
a. 1st year;
b. 2nd year;
c. 3rd year;
d. 4th year; and
e. 5th year and above.
On 3 May 2024, I asked if you could confirm if you were requesting the headcount (physical number) and/ or
Equivalent Full Time Student (EFTS) number of law students. You confirmed that you were requesting the
headcount number. On the same day, you also requested.
Along with my previous requests, may I also please request the fol owing information:
1. The number of law students who identify as:
a. Asian
b. European
c. Māori
d. MELAA (Middle Eastern, Latin American, and African) e. Pasifika d. Other
2. The number of law students who identify as a. Male b. Female c. Gender diverse
Please find overleaf your requested information. Please note that UC’s Faculty of Law I Te Kaupeka Ture owns
the programmes for Criminal Justice as wel as Law. For clarity, the figures provided are for those completing Law
qualifications. The data is accurate as of May 2024.
The University reports on what course level (stage) students are enrolled in, not what year within a qualification
they are in. This is because students do a mix of different course levels at different years of a qualification. This
makes it difficult to ascertain what year of a qualification they are in without going into each individual student’s
record. This is also reported in Equivalent Ful Time Student (EFTS) numbers, to reflect that students can be
enrol ed in different course levels simultaneously.
Please note that headcount numbers do not consider the workload of a student i.e whether they are a ful or part
time student. Where there is less than or equal to five students in a category, the actual number has not been
provided, but a range of less than or equal to five. This to protect the individual’s privacy as per section 9(2)(a) of

the Act. It is in the public interest that information be provided in a manner that ensures individuals are not
identifiable.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
how to make a complaint is available
