Re: Council use of herbicides
I refer to your email, which we received on 22 April 2015, requesting information about
council’s use of herbicides.
The information listed below organises the herbicides used by the Auckland Council group
by the organisation, department, or unit responsible for their use.
Auckland Transport
Areas to be sprayed in May
AT can only supply the areas to be sprayed in May as the weather, growth and other factors
can influence the planned spray areas.
Note: The attached map (Auckland Transport Map.pdf) indicates what is sprayed in which
area so it needs to be read in conjunction with the information below.

Watercare
Within Headworks and Water Treatment: Herbicides are controlled using processes defined
in the Herbicide Spray Manual and limited to the use of Glyphosate. Herbicides are applied
by Watercare staff or contractors who are trained in herbicide application, notionally on a
monthly basis. Spray application is outside of the Water Catchments for all Headworks and
Water Treatment plants. In-catchment weed control is undertaken manually.
Rest of Watercare: Herbicides and weed sprays (such as Glyphosate, Roundup, Tordon,
Agpro Terminate) are applied around fence lines, pathways and assets such as pump
stations and wastewater treatment plant assets for weed maintenance.
Property
Maintenance contractors use Hit Man and Kiwicare Organic weedkillers for grounds work on
council’s properties. Both products are organic.
Parks (Local and Sports)
Spraying will be undertaken in many (but not all) of the approximately 4000 parks in the
region. Precise timing varies due to weather and available resource levels. The herbicides
used are:
Amitrole, Archer, Biosafe, Clopyralid (eg Versatil), Dicamba (Lawn clean), Gallant,
Gesaprim, Glyphosate (eg Roundup), Metsulfuron (eg Escort), Nortron, Picloram (Vigilant
gel), Propyzamide (Kerb flo), Simazine, Triclopyr (eg Triclop)
Biosecurity and Regional Parks
Glyphosate (eg Roundup), Metsulfuron (eg Escort), Clopyralid (eg Versatil), Ptopyzamide
(eg Kerb 500F)
Spraying will be undertaken with most parks to some degree given the quarterly nature of
herbicide application. Precise timing varies due to weather and available resource levels.
City Parks Services
City Parks Services maintains all of the reserves in the Central sector of Auckland, and in
terms of a forward schedule, edging of turf in most reserves are treated with Glysophate on
a quarterly basis (excepting where they are
mechanically edged). Clopyralid (
Versatil) &
Metsulfuron-methyl
(Escort) are used reactively on an as-required basis.
In street environments we also utilise an organic herbicide (
Biosafe) made from coconut oil
approximately every 6 weeks.
Stormwater
South Operations
Herbicides are used for spraying weeds around Stormwater assets in months of May and
November.
Herbicides used: Green Glyphosate 510 and Meturon
Central Operations
Herbicides are used for reactive spraying only.
