Request for information
Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request on 13 March 2024 in which you
asked for information regarding the promotion of certain products on TradeMe.
My response to each part of your request can be found below.
- On what grounds is it a Police matter that a person promoted t-shirt sales on TradeMe
with the slogan 'It's Okay To Be White'?
- Under what legal authority can the New Zealand Police collect information about
someonw (sic
) on the basis that they are promoting t-shirt sales on TradeMe with the
slogan 'It's Okay To Be White'?
Police does not hold any information or documents which act to answer these parts of your
request. As such, this part of your request is refused under section 18(g) of the OIA, as the
information is not held by Police. I can advise however that Police receives information from a
range of sources that may be of potential relevance to its functions under the Policing Act 2008.
- How did the New Zealand Police become aware that such t-shirt sales were being
promoted?
As previously advised in my response to you of 18 March 2022 (IR-01-21-36883 refers), Police
became aware of VJM Publishing promoting the sale of t-shirts on TradeMe in May 2019
through media reporting.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not satisfied with the
response to your request. Information about how to make a complaint is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz
Yours sincerely
