Recent protest action
• A protest action occurred at Te Papa on Monday 11 December 2023, and the
wooden display panel showing the English translation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
was damaged with spray paint and a power tool.
• No museum collection items were damaged, and protesters were removed from
the premises by Police.

• The focus for Te Papa is on the safety of everyone in the museum, and on the
protection of the taonga in its care.
Next steps
• Manatū Taonga will engage with Te Papa on any impending investigation into
the security of the museum and the safety of staff and visitors.

Update on protest action regarding the Te Tiriti display
• In late December 2023 Te Papa was advised that a further protest by Te Waka Hourua
could take place. Te Papa undertook a number of precautions, including an approach
to defuse and de-escalate as much as possible prior to the protest action.
• The proposed precautions were successful, and a meeting undertaken with Te Waka
Hourua leaders on the morning of the subsequent protest was productive.
• Te Papa has advised that the defaced panels will remain on display over the summer
period and that the exhibition will be renewed, however this will take time.
• Te Papa is undertaking a full review of the initial protest incident.
Next steps
• The Ministry will continue to update you once Te Papa has completed its review into
the protest action.
