Thank you for your request to the Department of Conservation (DOC), received on 9 March
2024, in which you asked for:
A breakdown (including forecast) of JFN funding contracted but unused from 1 July
2024, by the end of the current four-year programme, showing:

total dollar value of unused funding

names of each contracted party with unused funding,
-
dollar value of unused funding for each contracted party
-
if the funding is planned to be extended beyond 30 June 2024, the parties that
the funding wil be extended for (incl. under consideration), and the dollar
value under consideration for extension or extended
We have considered your request under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (OIA).
Jobs for Nature is a cross-government programme established to create nature-based
employment in response to the economic impacts of COVID-19. DOC is responsible for
allocation of $485 million to create jobs for up to 4,800 people, deliver lasting conservation
benefits, and support sustainable land use and regulation.
Further to your request there is no ‘unused funding’ as all funding has been allocated and
contracted to project partners, who are still delivering. Therefore, in providing a breakdown of
‘funding contracted but unused’, this response instead provides a breakdown of all remaining
payments scheduled to be made by DOC to Jobs for Nature funded projects beyond 30 June
2024. Please note that this information is correct at the time of your request and could be
subject to further changes.
Remaining payments beyond 30 June 2024
In June 2023, the Sustainable Land Use Minister endorsed the Jobs for Nature programme as
being extended to 30 June 2025. The table provided in Appendix 1, below, provides you with
the remaining funding to be paid to all Jobs for Nature project partners beyond 30 June 2024.
The table also provides the end date of the projects, in some cases the final payment may be
made just after 30 June 24 and therefore is within scope of this response.

I am refusing the part of your request to identify parties with extensions under consideration
under section 9(2)(j) of the OIA – to enable the Crown to negotiate without disadvantage or
prejudice. The details of these are in varying stages of decision making and given they are
not yet confirmed are highly variable to change.
In making my decision, I have considered the public interest considerations in section 9(1) of
the OIA and determined there are no public interests that outweigh the grounds for
withholding.
You are entitled to seek an investigation and review of my decision by writing to an
Ombudsman as provided by section 28(3) of the OIA.
