Herbicides in public areas
Thank you for your information request dated 29 January 2024, regarding the health and
safety plans for the use of herbicides. The specific details of your request and our response
is below.
Please provide a copy of Council's Health and Safety and Risk Management Plans for
the use of herbicides in public areas. Do you not have a standard or generic
procedure for contractors using these herbicides where public have regular access?
In that case, lets just focus on road verges and regional parks as examples.
Auckland Council is responsible for maintaining the green spaces within the road corridor
under contract to, and on behalf of Auckland Transport, through our full facilities contractors.
For the application of herbicides each contractor possesses their own standard operating
procedure (SOP) documents, we have provided Citycare’s documents as an example.
Please refer to the at ached;
• Application of Herbicides SOP; and
• Hazardous Substances Management SOP
For herbicide application in Regional Parks, Rangers use the council’s standard operating
procedures. Please refer to the attached Spray Mixing Application SOP document.
The decision by Auckland Council to release the information contained in this response was
made by
Taryn Crewe, General Manager Parks and Community Facilities.
Should you believe Auckland Council has not responded appropriately to your request you
have the right to seek a review of the decision from the Ombudsman.
I hope you find this information useful. If you have any further queries please contact me on
09 301 0101, quoting LGOIMA No. 8140013097.
