OIA: 1321642 – One hour a day policy
Thank you for your email of 25 January 2024 to the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) requesting
the following information:
My OIA requests the information regarding change to the 2024 curriculum as promoted by
the new government What the changes are, and when do they begin.
On 31 January 2024, you clarified your request as follows:
Thank you for the opportunity to clarify, yes my request was to include the 1hr
implementation as National promised in the 100 day plan, also any other changes they plan
to introduce eg gender identification and Maori predominance etc.
Your request has been considered under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act).
The Government’s ‘one hour a day’ policy for teaching reading, writing, and maths will be
implemented from term one 2024. The Ministry has published information regarding what the
changes are, how the policy wil be rolled out and resources to support schools to prepare for the
change, at the following link:

I am therefore refusing your request under section 18(d) of the Act, as the information is publicly
available.
There are no other curriculum changes relating to either gender identification or Māori
predominance set out in the Government’s 100 Day Plan.
The health and physical education learning area, includes the relationships and sexuality education
(RSE) guidelines. The RSE guidelines provide support for teachers, leaders and boards and do not
form part of the national curriculum. When the health and physical education learning area is
reviewed and refreshed this year, the RSE guidelines wil also be revisited and revised. However,
there are currently no changes planned.

I am therefore refusing this part of your request under section 18(e) of the Act, as the information
requested does not exist.
While not a curriculum change, the Government has introduced regulations that require all state
and state-integrated schools and kura to have student phone rules in use, as set out in the 100
Day Plan. Rules must be in use as soon as possible in Term 1 2024 and no later than Term 2.
