RESPONSE TO YOUR INFORMATION REQUEST 
 
Thank you for your correspondence of 17 January 2024, in which you requested, pursuant to 
the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), information about the Ministry of Defence’s use of 
Microsoft Copilot or other generative artificial intelligence or large language model services: 
 
Does the Ministry have any active Copilot for Microsoft 365 licenses? 
 
If so, how many, and what is the total cost of this licensing? 
 
If not, does the Ministry license any competing generative artifical intelligence (Gen 
AI) or large language model (LLM) services? 
 
The Ministry of Defence does not currently licence Copilot or other generative AI or LLM 
services. 
 
Under section 28(3) of the Act you have the right to request the Ombudsman to investigate 
and review this response.
