proposal. 
•  The Board requested that the formal prescriptions for NPSY 706 and NPSY 707 be 
added to the proposal document when it is archived and that the student 
workload hours be reviewed to ensure that they align correctly to the point values

SCI-1 - To amend the name of the Consumer Food Science subject for MAppSc, 
PGDipAppSc, and PGCertAppSc to Food and Agriculture and to amend the schedule of 
requirements, subject to: 
 •  Confirmation that the Pro-Vice-Chancelor of the Division of Sciences is happy for 
this proposal to progress. 
•  Further information from the Department of Food Science reviewing how this 
programme would be placed among other postgraduate offerings, and

NB: Both of the above conditions have been satisfactorily fulfilled following the Board’s 
hui. 
 
Noting that: 
 •  The Department has confirmed that correct version of the proposed programme 
name is ‘Food and Agriculture’.

Topics in Advanced Food Science 6 and FOSC 407 Topics in Advanced Food Science 
7 – to ensure adequate codes to cater for all of the topics delivered under the 
paper codes FOSC 421-425, which are being deleted by this proposal.

HSC-1 - To amend the requirements for the Bachelor of Dental Technology 
(BDentTech) and Bachelor of Dental Technology with Honours (BDentTech(Hons)), 
including DTEC paper deletions, introductions, and amendments, noting that: 
 •  The Board recommended that the BDentTech(Hons) should be re-framed as a one-
year degree fol owing the BDentTech rather than as a four-year degree 
incorporating the BDentTech curriculum, with this revision to be incorporated 
prior to submission to CUAP.

•  The Board recommended further consultation with the Departments of Chemistry 
and of Physics regarding opportunities to teach into the new curriculum, noting 
that the University would encourage the efficient use of teaching resources.

HUM-1 - To introduce a new paper, ENGL 470 Storyworlds and Cognition, the content 
of which has previously been offered as a special topic 
 
HUM-2 - To introduce two new papers, PHIL 417 Advanced Problems in Foundational 
Philosophy and PHIL 418 Advanced Problems in Applied Philosophy, with 
consequential deletions of PHIL 405 Philosophy of Biology and PHIL 462 Special Topic, 
noting that: 
 •  The Board observed that the outline of lectures for the new papers did not seem to 
align precisely to the prescriptions of either paper and queried whether the 
prescriptions corresponded correctly to how the content was divided between the 
two papers. 
•  The Board commended the proposed assessment for PHIL 417, particularly noting 
how the essay is designed as a mechanism for developing analytical thought. 
 
College of Education 
 
HUM-3 - To amend the prerequisites for EDUC 572 Primary Curriculum 2 and EDUC 
577 Secondary Curriculum 2

Physics

SCI-2 - To delete the Electronics subject and ELEC papers, noting that: 
 •  The Electronics subject does not appear in the 2023 Puka Whakamārama | 
University Calendar and that an earlier version should be referenced regarding 
which qualifications had included Electronics as a subject. 
 
Physics 
 
SCI-3 - To amend the point value of EMAN 490, noting that: 
 •  Students’ names should be redacted from the proposal. 
•  References to PGDipAppSc and MAppSc in the paper’s ‘Limited to’ rule should be 
removed. 
•  The Energy Management subject wil  move into the BSc(Hons) if the proposal to 
delete the BAppSc(Hons) is approved. 
•  Some flexibility and breadth wil  be lost from the Energy Management subject 
with the increase in points value to this paper. 
 
Mathematics and Statistics 
 
NB: The Acting Convener declared a conflict of interest regarding SCI-4 and SCI-5 and 
refrained from participating in discussion of these proposals. 
 
SCI-4 - To introduce new 400-level MATH paper and consequential y delete existing 
400-level MATH papers 
 
SCI-5 - To amend the Mathematics subject requirements for BSc(Hons) 
 
Applied Sciences

SCI-6 - To delete the Bachelor of Applied Science with Honours (BAppSc(Hons)) and 
consequential changes, noting that: 
 •  The timing of deletions and the transfer of retained subjects into the Bachelor of 
Science with Honours (BSc(Hons)) will create workload pressures for ITS 
Applications Support staff working with eVision and may cause some 
inconvenience or confusion for students during the transition. 
•  It is not expected that CUAP approval wil  be needed to transfer retained subjects 
into new bachelor’s honours degrees, but the Secretary to the Board wil  seek 
confirmation of this from the UNZ staff supporting CUAP. 
•  The Board expressed its thanks to Mark Wilesmith – as wel  as Carol Forbes and 
Rebecca Connaughton – for the work that went into this proposal.

HUM-2 - An indicative proposal to introduce a new qualification, Master of Creative 
Writing, noting that: 
 •  Otago is currently an outlier among universities in Aotearoa in not offering a Master 
of Creative Writing. 
•  The programme could form connections with the Cities of Literature network, of 
which Ōtepoti is a part. 
•  While it is expected that there wil  be sufficient domestic demand to justify the 
programme, international enrolments wil  stil  be sought and welcomed. 
•  It is not envisioned that part-time enrolment in the programme would be feasible 
given that the workshop model requires a cohort approach, but it could be possible 
to explore a part-time cohort if there is sufficient demand. 
•  The Board would encourage working with Otago University Press  where 
appropriate. 
•  The Board noted the programme’s potential to align with the digital gaming 
industry in Dunedin in relation to digital narratives.

Bioethics 
 
HSC-2 - To amend the paper rules for BITC papers, noting that: 
 •  Some of the amended papers appear on Schedule C for programmes in other 
Divisions, and the Divisional Academic Boards of those Divisions should have been 
consulted, but the Board agreed that the amendments are minor enough that 
they may continue to progress. 
•  It would have been helpful to highlight the particular differences between the 
current and proposed paper rules, and it would be helpful to highlight such 
differences in any similar proposals going forward. 
•  The shift to using an eligibility framework rather than specific prerequisite rules 
wil  prevent automatic eligibility checking for students in eVision, and such shifts 
would generally be discouraged, but the Board agreed that this approach is 
appropriate for BITC papers given the highly interdisciplinary nature of Bioethics. 
•  Removing paper rules from postgraduate papers wil  mean relying on students’ 
paper selections being escalated to the department to check student eligibility 
during the course approval process, and any changes to how task are escalated 
during the course approval process for postgraduate papers could impact on how 
eligibility needs to be handled for BITC papers and other papers across the 
University.

COM-1 - An indicative proposal to introduce a new suite of qualifications, 
Postgraduate Certificate in Business, Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Master of 
Business, noting that: 
 •  The proposed changes resulting from the establishment of this suite of 
qualifications should achieve sufficient efficiencies to justify the proposal without 
forecasting ambitious growth in enrolments, though the Board acknowledges that 
the Division’s own aspirations and expectations for enrolments – should the 
proposed qualifications be approved and implemented – exceed the forecasted 
growth, and the Board supports and encourages these aspirations. 
•  In light of the point above, careful consideration should be given about where to 
set forecasted enrolments in the full proposal to balance between the targets that 
may be reported against in future reviews and ensuring that the programmes are 
pursuing solid aspirational growth. 
•  The Board queried what considerations had taken places around the points values 
of papers that would be included in the proposal qualifications, and noted that the 
proposer viewed larger points values as an obstacle to providing the range of 
papers and content that it appears prospective students are wanting from the 
proposed qualifications. 
•  As the name ‘Master of Business’ has previously been used for a different 
qualification offered by the University, there are likely to be some recurring 
obstacles in the Student Management System, and there is some potential for 
confusion on the part of graduates and employers, but these issues are not seen 
to be insurmountable.
