Information Request – Additional allowance data

Thank you for your information request dated 13 December 2023 asking for the following
information:

•  Could you please provide the following information related to additional salary
allowances that are paid over and above the normal pay band for employees, and
the details associated with these allowances. Note this does not include career
staff.

Some examples of allowances would be:
Additional allowance for language/culture proficiency Additional allowance for
sought after skill/ability

Your request has been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).

I can advise that Fire and Emergency New Zealand does not pay additional salary allowances over
and above the salary of the employee. Career firefighters may receive skills-based allowances
above their base salaries, but non-operational employees do not. If a non-operational employee
has a specific skill set or proficiency that justified increased remuneration, it would be reflected in
an increased base salary rather than an additional allowance.

You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
Information about how to make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or
freephone 0800 802 602.
