Your Official Information Act request, ref: HNZ00033554
Thank you for your email on 6 December 2023, asking for information relating to kidney
donations and transplants, which has been considered under the Official Information Act
1982 (the Act). Please find each part of your request addressed below.
On 18 December, Te Whatu Ora contacted you to advise you that part of your request
(written below) was transferred to New Zealand Blood Service under section 14(b)(ii) of the
Act.
•
The number of non-directed kidney donations made per year since 2017 (or as far
back as data can easily be collated)
•
The number of people currently on the wait-list for a kidney transplant in NZ
Please see outlined below a response to the remaining part of your request.
•
The number of people on the wait-list for a kidney transplant that passed away
before a transplant could happen, per year since 2017
Unfortunately, Te Whatu Ora is unable to provide you with this information as it is held in notes on
individual case files. In order to provide you with this information, Te Whatu Ora staff would have to
manually review thousands of files. As such, we refuse your request under section 18(f) of the Act.
There are efforts to standardise data across the country, but these efforts will take time.
I have considered whether fixing a charge for the supply of the information or extending the
timeframe for response would enable Te Whatu Ora to respond. I do not consider that either option
would remove the impact that supplying the information would have on our other operations.
