Accreditation of Te Whatu Ora – Waitematā as a prevocational medical training provider
Thank you to you and your colleagues for your continued commitment to the medical training of
interns, throughout this challenging time.
At its October 2022 meeting, Council took stock of its one-year pause in the accreditation of
prevocational training providers and considered how it could ensure the ongoing provision of high
quality prevocational medical training over the 2023-24 year. It decided to resume accreditation
commencing July 2023, using the current (2022) set of accreditation standards. It further extended
Waitematā’s accreditation to 31 December 2024.
Accreditation visit date
We intend to carry out a two-day site visit of the four Northern region districts during 2023-24:
•
Te Toka Tumai Auckland: Jul-Sep 2023
•
Waitematā: Oct-Dec 2023
•
Counties Manukau: Jan-Mar 2024
•
Te Tai Tokerau: Apr-Jun 2024.
Council’s Education team will be in touch with more specific dates closer to the time. If there are any
specific dates when you and Waitematā’s chief medical officer would not both be available, please
let the Education team know via [email address].
under the Official Information Act 1982
Self-assessment
I have attached a copy of the accreditation standards. We ask that Waitematā self-assesses against
the accreditation standards and provides the report to us around eight weeks prior to the site visit.
We will provide you a template to complete at the same time as proposing site visit dates.
Annual report
This accreditation visit will replace the need for Te Whatu Ora – Waitematā to provide an annual
report by 30 June 2023.

Background
In April 2022 I wrote to you to inform you of Council’s decision to pause its accreditation cycle of
prevocational training providers, given the establishment of Te Whatu Ora and the disestablishment
of district health boards. Council also extended the accreditation of prevocational training providers
for an interim period until 30 June 2023.

At the same time, we initiated a project to redesign the accreditation framework for prevocational
accreditation. I provided further detail in my letter to you of 28 September 2022.
Council decided that the Northern region (Te Toka Tumai Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waitematā
and Te Tai Tokerau) is the most suitable to accredit in this year, based on the collective dates these
providers were last visited.
