Official Information Act request: Te reo Māori funding
Thank you for your email of 13 September 2023 requesting, under the Of icial Information Act
1982 (the Act), information relating to the funding of te reo
Māori in the Ministry of Justice (the
Ministry) Specifically, you requested:
Please provide me with the total amount of funding allocated for the development of
Te Reo in your ministry and affiliated organizations since the beginning of the new
government in 2020, along with a breakdown of how this allocated funding has been
utilized or distributed.
On 11 October 2023, the Ministry sent you a decision letter granting your request, and
advising we needed more time to finalise the information for release, and that the information
would be provided to you as soon as practicable.
Te Tāhū o te Ture - Ministry of Justice is commit ed to recognising and valuing te reo Māori.
Attached to this letter is Table 1, which provides a breakdown of the Ministry’s budgeted
funding for te reo Māori development for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 financial years. The
Ministry’s Annual Reports since 2011 are available at: justice.govt.nz/about/about-
us/corporate-publications/
Information for 2019/20 and 2020/21 is not available because te reo Māori development
funding was included as part of an overall learning and development budget, and not
separately identified. Therefore, I am refusing this part of your request under section 18(e) of
the Act as the information does not exist.

Notes for Table 1:
• Te Rito is a series of interactive online modules that include te reo Māori. The Ministry pays an annual licence for staff access.
• The Kōkiri app is an educational online application, which includes resources to help develop te reo Māori
• Rea Wānanga is a series of online interactive sessions. There are four sessions each in Poutama (level) 1 and Poutama 2; each session lasts for one
hour.
• E Tiu, tōku reo was similar to Rea Wānanga, but delivered by a different provider.
• Te-Pou Whakamanawa is a 12-week paired coaching programme (two people each session with a coach) for leaders that incorporates te reo Māori
practice.
• Kura Reo is a full-immersion residential programme which incorporates te reo.
