I have talked with staff in the Faculty of Education and Social Work responsible for the Graduate Diploma of
Teaching (Primary) and they indicate that an applicant for the programme located in Australia contacted the
Programme Director and was advised that if she could not return to New Zealand by this week, the start of the
Practicum component of the Graduate Diploma, she had the option to:
1. Complete Programme Fulltime in 2023, or
2. Complete Programme over two years. The non‐practicum courses would be completed in 2022 (120
points) online. The two practicum course in 2023 (30 points). The points load per year could be varied
according to the student’s requirements.
The initial Practicum for the Diploma class started today and although practicum are spread across the length of the
programme, the programme is designed to develop skills across the practicums that need to be completed in
sequence.
I am sure that you appreciate that the practicum requirements of the Diploma need to be met according to criteria
agreed with the Teachers Council and, while under lockdown we had some flexibility, we have no flexibility to vary
the Practicum in the circumstances in which the student finds herself.
It would be best for the student if she contacted the Faculty and explored the options available to her that way.

We’ve received a query from a domestic student stuck in Australia and who had enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in
Primary Teaching for this year. The student has been advised that to take the programme, she needs to be in
Auckland. We have acknowledged that the UoA has generally been brilliant at assisting students to study on line
while they deal with travel/COVID related issues, and that teaching programmes will include a considerable amount
of in‐class/practical time which can only be done face to face. However, we are interested in finding out please if
there are any other options available to this learner – e.g., online learning for part of the programme until the
learner is able to be in NZ physically. Thanks again Pamela and look forward to hearing back from you.

We have introduced some restrictions on the programmes that can be taken by international and domestic students
who are overseas. The Bachelor of Global Studies and the new Bachelor of Communications have not admitted new
students who are overseas to those programmes because of limited staff numbers impacting our ability to double
teach key first year courses.
Those are the only limits I am aware of. We have limited the courses that are being made available on‐line to off
shore students for the same reason. Programme advice has been provided to with students to ensure they can
complete programmes.

A question on the above please. Acknowledging that UoA has flexed and responded to the changing learning
environment due to the ongoing impacts of COVID aand the restrictions placed on face to face delivery. In light of
the continuing uncertainty and the changing rules around MIQ resulting in New Zalanders not being able to return
from overseas. Just wondering please if the flexibility around the delivery of classes online especially to learners
who may be stuck overseas is an option. If so are they restricted to only certain programmes?
