Te Whatu Ora – Health New Zealand does not hold national level data on the numbers of people
diagnosed with the conditions requested. We hold information on the number of hospitalisations for
these diagnoses. This only includes people who required hospital treatment for their condition.
The 2021/2022 financial year is the latest year for which complete national level hospital events
data is available. Data for 2020/21 and 2021/22 is considered provisional. Between 1999 and
2012 there were changes in the way former District Health Boards (DHBs) reported their
emergency department (ED) data. Data provided for these years should therefore be interpreted
with caution. More information about this issue can be found here:
https:/ www.health.govt.nz/publication/factsheet-short-stay-emergency-department-events.
Please find a spreadsheet containing the numbers of publicly funded hospital discharges from
1999/00 to 2021/22, attached as
Appendix 1. The conditions included in this spreadsheet are
Bell's palsy, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Acute myocardial infarction, Pulmonary embolism, Acute
pericarditis, Acute myocarditis, Stroke, and Spontaneous abortion.
People hospitalised multiple times due to transfers, readmission, or multiple incidents will be
counted each time they are discharged.
Data about cancers diagnosed in New Zealand is available online. You can access data covering
the period 2011 to 2020 at the following link:
https://www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/our-health-system/data-and-statistics/cancer-web-tool/. This web
tool wil be updated with data from 2021 in December 2023.
We also publish tables of data which cover the period from 1948, available online at the following
