OFFICIAL INFORMATION ACT 1982 (OIA) – REQUEST FOR INFORMATION -
CHRISTCHURCH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LIMITED (CIAL)
1.
We write further to our email of 02 August 2023, acknowledging receipt of your OIA
request of 02 August 2023 seeking information (if held by CIAL) in relation to the
proposed Central Otago airport project:
Request : Received 2 August – Community Sentiment on the new Central
Otago Airport
I am requesting all correspondence, documents, data or analysis held by CIAL on
community sentiment towards the proposed Central Otago Airport. Please provide
anything you have on Central Otago residents (however narrow or wide the analysis)
and Christchurch residents. And finally, anything which is more nation-wide.
Also all correspondence, documents, data or analysis held by CIAL on community (as
opposed to visitor) travel patterns.
2.
Community Sentiment - CIAL has not undertaken any formal surveys or data
gathering exercises to calculate or measure support among the community for the
Project. It has however, over the course of the past three years, met with a number
of different individuals and entities, including specific representatives of community
groups, businesses and local authorities. As noted on the “Engagement” page of the
Project
website
(https://www.centralotagoairport.co.nz/engagement),
CIAL
recognises the impacts of the Project are of concern to some and CIAL has therefore
made engaging with Central Otago communities and other key stakeholders a priority.
3.
Community Travel Patterns – As noted in the Land Transport Information Sheets
available
at
https://www.centralotagoairport.co.nz/information-
resources/information-papers CIAL’s preliminary analysis has not yet looked at the
connections between the proposed airport site and the local Tarras area immediately
around it. However, overall it shows the new airport’s impact would be proportionally
greater on highways closer to its site. Because this would add to a low base, traffic
volumes would still remain comparatively low.
4.
We trust we have answered your requests for information. If you require any further
information or if we have in some way misinterpreted your requests, please let us
know.
5.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of the
decisions contained in this letter. Information about how to contact the Ombudsman
or make a complaint is available at www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or freephone
0800 802 602.
Yours sincerely
CIAL LEGAL TEAM
