Thank you for your email of 29 July 2023 requesting the following information under the Official 
Information Act 1982 (the Act): 
 
I would like to request the most recent National Land Transport (Road) Noise Map in 
geodatabase format. Specifically, the ESRI geodatabase mentioned as output in 6.0 in 
this report, or the latest version since the report's release:

and-vibration/Research-and-information/Other-research/national-land-transport-road-
noise-map-2019-05-16.pdf 
 
I would also prefer the map be released along with other supplemental information 
through the NZTA's Open Data Portal https://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/open-data-
portal/. Though if it will slow down the release of this data, please send it to me instead. 
 
On 25 August 2023 we asked you to clarify the spatial extent that you are interested in and the 
intended use of this information. We advised you that, as noise maps can potentially reveal private 
information about individuals, this would assist us with balancing public interests with privacy 
concerns. The 2019 Noise Maps that you refer to were also not released publicly due to privacy 
concerns. 
 
As we have not received a response from you, your request has been deemed as outside the 
principles of the Act as, in accordance with Section 12(2) of the Act, it has not been specified with due 
particularity. 
 
We would be happy to reconsider a further clarified request from you. 
 
We can, however, advise that a separate current research project TAR 19/01 also includes road traffic 
noise mapping as an output. This project has not yet been finalised and we are still in the process of 
resolving content issues with the maps. The same privacy considerations also apply to the TAR 19/01 
maps as to the 2019 Noise Maps.
