I refer to your information request dated 25 July 2023 made under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act). You have requested information in relation to the number of people trespassed from the
University of Otago.
Subject to the following comments, see below our response to your request.
• the information we have provided to you below is correct as of 2 August 2023.
• a number of people are trespassed from the University of Otago every year for a number of
reasons, mostly related to the safety of our staff and students.
• clause 4 of th
e University Campuses and Premises Regulations 2014 states that:
4.1. No person shall enter or remain in
a. any part of the Campus; or b. any of the University’s Affiliated Colleges, to which he or she knows, or ought
reasonably to know, that he or she is not entitled to have access at the relevant
time.
1. How many people are currently trespassed from any part of the University of Otago?
Nine people are currently trespassed from any part of the University of Otago. Please note that a
trespass notice usually lasts for 2 years (or part thereof), therefore, trespass notices still active may
have been issued in 2021, 2022 or 2023.
2. How many of these people who are currently trespassed relate to any form of protest
action?
Two of the current trespass notices relate to a form of protest action.
3. Generally, has the number of trespass notices increased or decreased over a five-year period
of time (say from the number of active notices on April 1 2018 and April 1 2023)?
The number of active trespass notices at any given time can fluctuate depending on when they are
issued and how long they are issued for. However, the number of trespass notices issued each year
has remained the same since 2018 – on average, 5 – 10 people have been trespassed from the
University of Otago each year.
