Dear Alex, 
 
I refer to your request dated 24 July 2023, made under the Of icial Information Act 1982 (the Act), asking:  
 
I would like to see how much fuel (diesel) is used by Kiwirail trains per year. 
 
Could you please send the annual consumption for the following trains: 
 
-Coastal Pacific 
-TranzAlpine 
-Northern Explorer 
-Capital Connection 
-Wairarapa Connection 
-Waikato Connection 
 
I understand that fuel consumption may have dropped due to covid. Would it be possible that I receive the peak values from previous 
years, if they exceed current demands. 
 
We have considered your request and have attached records for 2019 and 2023 as information was limited due to Covid. The basis of 
our calculations is that we estimated the total annual fuel consumption based on the total kilometres travelled times and estimated 
burn rate per kilometre. 
 
You have the right to seek an investigation and review of this response by the Ombudsman, in accordance with section 28(3) of the 
Act. The relevant details can be found on the Ombudsman’s website: www.ombudsman.parliament.nz.
