EXECUTIVE COUNCIL CHAMBERS

Dear Samuel Vivian
Thank you for your enquiry. At this stage, there are no plans to establish a New Zealand medal
along the lines of the Australian National Emergency Medal.
For a small country, New Zealand has a reasonably comprehensive honours system, and those
who make an exceptional contribution can be nominated for a New Zealand Royal
Honour. Uniformed agencies, including the New Zealand Police, and the New Zealand Defence
Force, also have a range of recognition options for their personnel, including medals and
decorations that are part of the New Zealand Royal Honours system, as well as agency-level
awards. Agencies and sectors recognise staff and volunteer contributions in a number of ways
that are appropriate for their context.
While there are currently no plans to establish a New Zealand medal along the lines of the
Australian National Emergency Medal, recognition for service in times of significant national
events is something that the Government will continue to consider.
Yours sincerely
Rachel Hayward
