Waikato Medical School Proposal 
The University of Waikato is proposing to establish a new graduate entry medical school which will 
require approximately $250m over 10 years to establish. In col abora�on with the Waikato District 
Health Board, the university submited an early stage business case to Ministers Joyce and Coleman 
for their considera�on. The business case was assessed by both the TEC and Ministry of Health. The 
business case has merit but will require further work before it is suitable for formal considera�on for 
funding by the Government. A leter to the two Waikato par�es from both Ministers has been 
dra�ed and is awai�ng ministerial approval. 
You and the Minister of Health wil  need to consider the case in due course.
