Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request of 7 July 2023, requesting: 
“Please provide the date of first initial contact between yourself or your office and Mike Bush 
in regards to his engagement with Oranga Tamariki.” 
Your request has been considered by this Office in accordance with the provisions of the OIA. 
Employment decisions are operational and a matter for Oranga Tamariki. On 18 June 2023 
Oranga  Tamariki  appointed  former  Police  Commissioner  Mike  Bush  as  DCE  Residences. 
Mike Bush was appointed to provide leadership and oversight of the whole Oranga Tamariki 
residential network, to lead an independent rapid review of all Oranga Tamariki residences, 
and to implement the recommendations from the rapid review.    
On the same day, Oranga Tamariki advised Minister Davis and his office of the appointment 
of Mike Bush. This was discussed further in a meeting with Oranga Tamariki officials on 19 
June 2023. Mike Bush officially started his role with Oranga Tamariki on Friday 23 June.  
Minister Davis and his staff had a phone call with Mike Bush on Monday 26 June 2023.
