Thank you for your email of 26 June 2023 to the Department of Corrections – Ara Poutama 
Aotearoa, requesting information about the cost per prisoner. Your request has been 
considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA). 
 
You requested: 
 
Under the OIA please provide the latest cost per prisoner as of 26/06/2023. 
 
The cost per prisoner is published in Corrections Annual Reports following the close of the 
financial year. As such, we are unable to readily provide the cost per prisoner on any specific 
date. An updated figure will be published in Correction 2022/23 Annual Report in due 
course. Therefore, your request is refused in accordance with section 18(d) of the OIA as the 
information requested is or will soon be publicly available. 
 
The cost per prisoner per day in the 2021/22 financial year was $531 for a person on 
sentence and $408 for a person on remand. This can be found on page 172 of Corrections 
2021/22 Annual Report, which can be located here.
