Request under the Official Information Act 1982 - Applications for the New Zealand Broadcasting
School
Thank you for your email of 14 June 2023, requesting the fol owing information from Te Pūkenga
trading as Ara Institute of Canterbury (Ara).
I would like to know how many people have applied for the New Zealand Broadcasting School
over the past 5 years and broken down into the different streams, and how many of these
applicants have been successful.
This letter provides a formal decision on your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA).
Background
The New Zealand Broadcasting School has capacity for 24 ākonga (students) in each of the three
streams of: Journalism, Radio and Screen Production, for each year’s intake.
This has an obvious effect on the number of successful applications when compared to the number
of people who have applied. There are various reasons for an application to not be successful that
are not related to the number of ākonga that we can take, including when the applicant is in
employment, or the applicant is no longer interested in the programme of study, or the applicant
does not reply to the offer of place, or when the application is declined for other reasons (for
example, does not meet the entry criteria).
The decision
The information you have requested is attached at
Appendix One. This information covers intakes
for the Year 1 programme of the Bachelor of Broadcasting Communication, from 2018-2022, for the
following streams: Journalism, Radio and Screen Production.
You have the right to make a complaint to the Ombudsman under section 28(3) of the OIA if you are
not happy with this response. Information about how to do this is available at
www.ombudsman.parliament.nz or by cal ing 0800 802 602.
