Official Information Act request re Te Matatini 
Thank you for your Official Information Act request received on 9 June.  
You requested “[d]etails of any and all funding the Arts Council/Creative NZ has provided to 
Te Matatini/Te Matatini Inc since 2017.” 
Te Matatini Society is funded by Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture & Heritage. We aim to ensure 
our investment complements that of other agencies, avoids duplication, and ensures effective and 
efficient use of public money.  
Creative New Zealand supports a range of ngā toi Māori artforms within kapa haka but does not 
fund activities or programmes already funded by Te Matatini in relation to whakataetae

In 2022, Creative New Zealand signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Te Matatini Society 
and New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute—Te Puia (NZMACI) which set out an intention to 
co-operate on the presentation and overall experience of the Tuku Iho – A Living Legacy Exhibition at 
Te Matatini 2023. As part of this Memorandum, Creative New Zealand funded NZMACI $80,000 in 
2022/23, under our Te Hā o ngā Toi—Māori Arts Strategy, to fund the Tuku Iho exhibition at 
Te Matatini festival 2023 and to host a VIP evening. The role of Te Matatini in the partnership was to 
administer the financial arrangements and provide the exhibition space and staff access for the Tuku 
Iho exhibition and VIP night. 
This is the only funding Creative New Zealand has provided to Te Matatini Society since 2017.
