I refer to your information request dated 3 June 2023 made under the Official Information Act 1982 
(the Act). You have received grade distributions for the LAWS101, LAWS201, LAWS202, LAWS203, 
LAWS204 and LAWS298 from 2020 – 2022, as well as the number of students who completed the 
papers, and the mean and median marks for each paper. 
 
Subject to the following comments, please see attached the information you have requested. Please 
note that there are three pages in the attached spreadsheet (one for each year).  
 
Grade and Mark Distributions: 
 
•  on occasions where fewer than five students have failed a paper (i.e. received a grade of Fail 
D or Fail E), we have determined that it is necessary to withhold the marks and specific 
grades for these students to protect their privacy and wellbeing. We consider that 
withholding this information is necessary to protect against the identity of these students 
being determined or inferred, and their personal information (i.e. their marks) could be 
disclosed. We therefore withhold this information pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act. 
 
•  in the attached grade and mark distributions, we note that students who withdrew from the 
papers are excluded from the data (as they received no final grade or mark). 
 
Paper Completions: 
 
•  paper completion data includes all students who completed the papers with a Pass or 
Aegrotat grade (i.e. all students who failed or withdrew from the papers are excluded). 
Further information on the Aegrotat pass grade is available on the University website. 
 
Mean and Median Marks: 
 
•  the mean and median mark data is calculated based on all student marks in a particular 
paper, except for students who withdrew from the papers or received an Aegrotat pass (as 
these students receive no final mark).  
 
LAWS298: 
 
•  LAWS298 is a paper where students can only be awarded a Completed or Fail result (not a 
grade or mark). Therefore, we are unable to provide the mean and median marks for this 
paper as they do not exist.

outweighed by other considerations which would make it desirable, in the public interest, to make 
the information available. If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request,
