Information Request – Station %NBS ratings
I refer to your official information request dated 18 May 2023 asking for the following information
.
“Could you please provide a list of each of the stations in NZ with their current earthquake rating
(%nbs)”
Please see
enclosed, a list of all stations and their assessed %NBS, we have assessed to IL4 rather
than the standard IL2 risk assessment given our status as an emergency service provider. Seismic
resilience of our properties is a key focus for Fire and Emergency. Since the beginning of 2018 we
have completed 22 seismic upgrade projects, 31 new build projects and installed 26 seismic
accelerometer monitors in facilities across the country. During the 2021/22 financial year, $29.0m
was invested in seismic strengthening and upgrades.
Fire and Emergency has an ongoing programme of work to ensure any earthquake prone buildings
will be in line with our self-determined seismic resilience standard (≥67% NBS IL4). In the 2022/23
financial year-to-date, we have invested $7.7m in seismic strengthening and upgrades.
Please note, some fire station structural assessments are based on desktop or IEP (initial
evaluation procedure) procedures and not DSA (detailed structural assessment). Consequently,
where a site has only been assessed either by desktop or IEP it is possible that on-site verification
and more detailed seismic assessment will change the %NBS.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
