Thank you for your correspondence of 6 May 2023 to the previous Minister of Immigration,
regarding Parent Resident Visas. Your correspondence has been referred to me to respond to.
I appreciate you taking the time to write, and I would like to sincerely apologise for the time it has
taken in responding to you.
The Government understands the intrinsic value that parents of migrants bring to families by
joining their adult children here in New Zealand. Therefore, following a review of the visa settings,
the Parent Resident Visa has been reopened under new settings that are more favourable for
migrant parents of New Zealand citizens and residents. Under the new settings, the number of
visas available each year has doubled, and Immigration New Zealand (INZ) expects the current
queue of expressions of interest (EOIs) to be selected by 2025.
EOIs began to be selected chronologically by submission date, the first draw was on the 14
November 2022. The selection of EOIs wil continue to occur every three months. At least 400
EOIs wil be selected per selection date and may increase depending on the success rate from
the previous selection, that is, if a selected EOI is not invited to apply, or if any residence visa
applications were withdrawn or declined. As such, when this occurs, it wil result in some EOIs
moving into an earlier selection month. INZ wil be selecting enough EOIs to reach 2,000 visa
approvals per annum, until there are no EOIs remaining in the queue. Please note the selection
dates are estimates only and are changed as INZ adjusts the number of EOIs it needs to select
to reach the 2,000 visa approvals per year. For further information on the selection dates, please

I note your query regarding changes being considered to this visa category. I can advise the
Government is not considering any further changes to the Parent Resident Visa at this stage. If
there are any changes made to this category in the future, they wil be communicated by INZ
accordingly.
