Scooters
Thank you for your request, which was partly transferred to us here at Wellington City Council from Te
Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington, made under the Local Government Official Information
and Meetings Act 1987 (the Act), received on 11 May 2023. You requested the fol owing information:
• Why is the entirety of the Kelburn Campus geofenced as a "no go zone" by both Beam and
Flamingo, when neither the Massey or Otago campuses in Wellington are? Was this a decision
made by Te Herenga Waka, or by Beam/Flamingo?
• What was the motivation to not work directly with these companies to provide e-scooter parking
near the boundaries of this "no-go zone" like Massey and Otago provide by their campuses?
Wellington City Council has granted
your request for information.
We can confirm that the decision to geofence Te Herenga Waka was not made by the Wellington City
Council. Council Officers have reached out to the team at Flamingo e-scooters and further information is
below.
As part of the landowner requirements in their Code of Practice, Flamingo scooters reached out to Te
Herenga Waka and were informed that there is a policy of no skateboarding on campus and that e-scooters
are treated in the same regard as skateboards, which ultimately means no riding or parking on campus.
Flamingo have advised that they can look closer into data they hold about how many trips are starting and
ending around the Kelburn campus, and approach Te Herenga Waka to open discussions about installing
some drop zones around the edges of the Kelburn campus.
