I refer to your request for information dated 14 April 2023 made under the Official Information Act 
1982. You have requested information in relation to the GPA of Finance Majors at the University of 
Otago. Specifically, you requested: 
 
“… the average/distribution of GPAs of BCOM Finance Majors over the last few years” 
 
We note we contacted you 19 April to clarify whether you were interested in receiving this data for 
the three-year Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) programme only, or whether you were also interested 
in receiving the data you requested for the four-year Bachelor of Arts and Commerce (BACom) and 
Bachelor of Commerce and Science (BComSc) programmes. Your response of 20 April 2023 
confirmed that you did wish for the BACom and BComSc data to be included with your request. 
 
Subject to the below comments, please see attached the information you have requested: 
 
•  a student’s GPA is calculated from all paper results in the year specified only, i.e., a student’s 
2020 GPA will be calculated from all paper results in 2020, regardless of subject area. If this 
same student was also enrolled as a Finance Major in 2021, they will have a separate GPA 
calculation for 2021 based on all paper results in 2021, regardless of subject area. 
 
•  the four-year BACom and BComSc programmes were only introduced in 2021, therefore the 
2020 information we have provided is only for the three-year BCom programme. The 
information for 2021 and 2022 includes the BCom, BACom and BComSc. 
 
•  please note that all final grades for papers completed in Semester 1 2020 were increased by 
5 marks to account for disruptions created by COVID-19. In Semester 2 2020, final grades of 
47, 48 or 49 were bumped up to 50 (pass) for the same reason.
