Hi Stephen,
Thanks for your email. Minister Al an wants me to pass on she is happy for the ful transcript of her
speech to be released by RNZ, noting it would be appropriate to redact any names of others
(other than Māni) for their privacy.
Kind regards,
Sophie

Kia ora Ben,
Hope you are keeping well and would appreciate if you could pass this on to the Minister.
On 31 March RNZ hosted a farewell event for Māni Dunlop. Attending were RNZ staff,
members of Ms Dunlop's whanau, and Ms Dunlop's partner, the Hon Kiritapu Allan.
RNZ received a number of OIA requests for details of all speeches and comments made
during the farewell. We are contacting the Minister as an interested party to advise of how
RNZ intends to meet its OIA obligations.
After careful consideration, RNZ is withholding under privacy grounds all the personal
stories, tributes, and kōrero from those who spoke that evening. However, RNZ has
concluded the public interest criteria requires it to release a transcript of the comments
made by the Minister which were specific to RNZ.
This was intended to be a private farewell, and people attending were aware that the floor
was open to all who wanted to share their views For this reason the majority of information
is being withheld on privacy grounds.
However, there are two comments in Minister Allan's speech which are captured by public
interest considerations under the OIA. All the more so give the Hon Allan’s status as a
Minister of the Crown. RNZ weighed up these considerations carefully in light of OIA
obligations. Please see below the specific sentences due for release.
As mentioned, the remainder of the speech, and the video and audio recording of the event
will be withheld on privacy grounds. It is our intention to proceed with the OIA release next
week.
Regards Stephen.

“There is something within this organisation that has to be looked at. Now I know that you
said that you would pick up that, the wero, that Māni left. It is not for just you, it is for your
SLT to pick up. It's for your SLT to pick up. It's for your boards to pick up. That there is
something within the organisation that will not, and has not been able to keep Māori talent
and that is a question that I think deserves some deep reflection….
We are looking at these two, and we are looking at this organisation and how it treats its
talent. Want to know… she doesn't need to do it, it's not her role to carry that anymore. So
it's to this room, and the people within this place to grow and nurture, show that they have
a viable future within this organisation. That you can come in as an intern and that you can
get to the top spot, not just because you are Māori but because you have trained them well,
you have nurtured them well.”
