Thank you for your follow up email on 21 March 2023, asking for the following which has
been considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
“The number of hospital admissions for each of the following conditions for the year 2021 –
1. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis
2. Acute kidney injury
3. Acute liver injury
4. Acute respiratory disease
5. Anaphylaxis
6. Anosmia and ageusia
7. Arrythmia
8. Arterial thrombosis
9. Aseptic meningitis
10. Cerebral venous thrombosis
11. Chilblain-like lesions
12. Coagulation disorder
13. Coronary artery disease
14. Diabetes mellitus
15. Encephalitis
16. Erythema multiforme
17. Generalised convulsion
18. Guillain-Barré and Mil er Fisher syndromes
19. Heart failure
20. Idiopathic thrombocytopenia
21. Lower limb venous thrombosis
22. Meningoencephalitis
23. Microangiopathy
24. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome
25. Myelitis
26. Myocarditis
27. Narcolepsy

The number of each of the above that occurred in persons after reception of 1 or more
doses of Covid-19 vaccines for the year 2021. For clarity, if a person received dose 1 on
March 1st , then the risk window (exposure period) would be March 1st to December 31st
. If a person received dose 1 on December 1, then the risk window wil be December 1st -
December 31st.

The number of each of the above that occurred within 7 days of date of dose 1

The number of each of the above that occurred within 7 days of date of dose 2
(Note, for items 3 and 4 I realise that since vaccination status is recorded as it was 7 days
prior to hospital admission these may not show up as ‘vaccinated’ and there may not be a
way to extract them from the data. If this is the case-please confirm as much)

The number of each of the above that occurred 8 and 21 days of date of dose 1
•
The number of each of the above that occurred 8 and 21 days of date of dose 2
•
The total number of all hospital admissions for any cause in 2021”
Te Whatu Ora publish hospitalisations data online here:
www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/our-health-
system/data-and-statistics/hospital-events-web-tool/. This provides the total number of hospitalisations until the 2019/20 financial year, plus
hospitalisations for specific causes. There were 1,275,092 publicly funded hospital discharges in
the 2020/21 financial year (extracted from the National Minimum Dataset (NMDS) 18/04/2023).
Please note that this is a count of discharges rather than admissions, because reporting to NMDS
is triggered by discharge. Some hospital admissions started during the period may not have ended
yet and wil therefore not have been reported to NMDS.
Determining the Covid-19 vaccination status of each publicly funded hospitalisation is deemed to be
excessive collation. As such, your request is refused under section 18(f) of the Act.
We have considered whether fixing a charge or extending the timeframe would reduce the impact of
responding to your request, but do not believe either option would make this feasible.
