Official Information Act request 23.12 Flag arrangement
I refer to the Official Information Act (the Act) request dated 15 March 2023 for information relating to flag
arrangements in the University of Canterbury (UC). You have requested the fol owing:

I kindly request all communication regarding the moving of the Taiwanese flag based in the reception
area, as well as all communication on the flag being replaced by the Chinese flag.
Matters that are out of scope of the request have been redacted. Staff member’s names and contact details
have been redacted under s 9(2)(a) of the Act, to protect the privacy of natural persons. Where any grounds
under s 9(2) of the Act have been relied upon, it must be balanced against the public interest as per s 9(1) of
the Act. Those who are in the Senior Leadership team have a public facing element of their roles and represent
the University in the wider community. Those below this level do not have the same public facing element of
their roles and therefore their names and contact details are withheld. The public interest is met by providing
the surrounding correspondence, which provides the information whilst stil protecting the individual’s privacy.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision. Information about
