Information Request – Fire and Emergency Vehicles
I refer to your information request dated 28 February 2023 requesting information on Fire and
Emergency New Zealand vehicles.
In accordance with the provisions of the Official Information Act 1982 (OIA), Fire and Emergency
New Zealand response to your request below.
1. How many vehicles does FENZ lease for their white fleet?
Fire and Emergency currently has 503 leased vehicles.
2. How many vehicles does FENZ own in their white fleet?
The light vehicle fleet includes 229 owned light vehicles. There are also 218 brigade owned
light vehicles and Fire and Emergency has the right to use another 13 vehicles owned by
other parties.
3. How many vehicles in the FENZ white fleet don't meet the motor vehicle policy & have
expired due to age of the vehicle or distance the vehicle has travelled?
The Fire and Emergency Motor Vehicle policy only specifies target age and mileages. For
replacement of contractual vehicles, it is 3 years or 100,000 km and tool of trade vehicles
it is 6 years or 150,000km. Currently replacement is on hold for some vehicles while we
review the operational requirements for each role and the vehicle options available.
Currently there are 144 vehicles known to be over their target replacement age or
distance travelled. They are:

4. How many of these are due to be replaced in the next 12 months? Which ones?
Replacement dates cannot be determined until the replacement make and model is
determined, and relevant supplier can advise of a delivery date. Currently we have 44
on order that have forecast delivery dates that are within the next 12 months.
5. Is the FENZ white fleet GPS tracked?
6. If not are there any plans to install that in the future?
No, the white fleet is not GPS tracked. There are currently no plans to install GPS in the
white fleet.
