Official Information request – Lease Payments 
I refer to your request for official information of 24 February 2023 in which you have requested 
the following: 
“The amount of lease payment for the land occupied by the University. For the first payment 
to the latest.” 
The University of Waikato (University) has given due consideration to your request and provides 
the following responses:  
1.  Information about the University’s lease payments can be found in its Annual Reports which 
are  publicly  available  and  accessible  at  https://www.waikato.ac.nz/annual-report/  under 
Download Previous Reports. 
2.  By way of explanation and context, in 1996 the land occupied by the University campus was 
transferred by the Crown to Waikato-Tainui, as part of the Crown’s settlement of the Raupatu 
claim. Prior to this, the University did not make lease payments because the land was owned 
by the Crown.  
The University is refusing part of your request under section 18(d) of the Official Information Act 
1982 (OIA) on the basis that the information requested will soon be publicly available. 
You  have  the  right  to  seek  an  investigation  and  review  by  the  Ombudsman  of  this  decision.
