OIA: 1326180 – Cloud infrastructure spend
Thank you for your email of 31 January 2023 to the Ministry of Education (the Ministry) requesting
the following information:
•
Please provide details of your total spend on cloud infrastructure over the last 5 years.
•
Please break the costs down by financial year.
•
Please break the costs down by cloud provider.
•
Please limit it to the following cloud providers: AWS, Azure, Catalyst Cloud, Google Cloud.
We have reconsidered your request under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act), following
discussion with the Office of the Ombudsman.
The Ministry has not used Catalyst Cloud and Google Cloud for cloud infrastructure in the previous
five years. As such, we are only providing costs for AWS and Microsoft Azure. Please see the
below
Table 1 for total spend on cloud infrastructure to AWS and
Table 2 for total spend on cloud
infrastructure to Microsoft Azure for the financial years 2017/18 to 2021/22.
We are providing the requested data below in NZD (exclusive of GST). Any conversions from USD
have been calculated using IRD midpoint exchange rates at the time of payment. Information on
overseas currency and conversion rates is available here:
https://www.ird.govt.nz/managing-my-
tax/overseas-currency-conversion-to-nz-dollars. As the data we provided you in April 2024 was
presented differently, in USD and NZD, this is not directly comparable to the data provided below.
