Official Information Act request: Community Magistrate recruitment 
 
Thank you for your email of 7 March 2025 requesting, under the Official Information Act 
1982 (the Act), copies of the appointment letters sent in relation to the following recent 
appointments. Specifically, you requested letters for:  
 
•  a chairperson of the Land Valuation Tribunal 
•  two acting members of the Otago Land Valuation Tribunal 
•  three Tenancy Adjudicators. 
 
No  appointment  letter  was  issued  for  the  appointment  of  the  Land  Valuation  Tribunal 
chairperson. The judge in question, Judge Semple, holds appointment to multiple tribunals 
and the action taken was an amendment to the coverage of the judge’s existing warrant. 
 
Copies of the other five appointment letters are attached. I note redactions have been 
made to these documents pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act to protect the privacy of 
natural persons. In accordance with section 9(1) of the Act, the Ministry has considered the 
public interest in making available the information being withheld and determined that it does 
not outweigh the need to withhold the information at this time.
