Thank you for your official information request received on 13 December 2022, for the following
information:
Regarding Matthew Tukaki, and as per 1News you are quoted as saying the
following:
“So we just trusted in what they had done, and I'd heard about the stuff he'd done
apparently overseas. He was also the head of the Māori Council,”
Under the Offical Information Act and l request the following:
All communications including but not limited to emails, texts and phone calls with
the Māori Council concerning Matthew Tukaki from January 1st 2019 until 13th
December 2022.
All communications including but not limited to emails, texts and phone calls
between yourself/your office and Minister Wil ie Jackson/Jackson’s office
concerning Matthew Tukaki from January 1st 2019 until 13th December 2022.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the provisions of the Official Information
Act 1982 (
the Act). We have interpreted your request to include any communications between
the Māori Council and Minister Davis and/or this office. With regard to the second part of your
request, we have limited the scope to communications between Minister Davis and his office,
and Minister Jackson and his office solely relating to Matthew Tukaki from the time period
specified in your request.
There is one document in scope of your request, which is attached at Annex 1. This document
is an email thread between Mr Tukaki and members of the Māori Council, and was sent to the
Minister’s ministerial office address. Information within this document has been withheld under
s9(2)(a) of the Act to protect the natural privacy of individuals. We do not believe there are any
considerations under s9(1) of the Act rendering it desirable in the public interest to make the
information available which outweigh the reason for withholding.
You have the right to seek an investigation and review by the Ombudsman of this decision.
