Thank you for another opportunity to provide feedback on our Scope of Practice and for taking note of many 
of the comments that came back to the Council from the first consultation.  
 
This feedback is from the Midwifery Clinical leadership of Waitaha – Midwife Mangers and Clinical midwife 
managers, clinical coordinating midwives and Te Waipounamu Maternity Quality and Safety Coordinators.  
 
We have some concerns about the manner in which the word whānau is used. Although we appreciate using 
the  Te  Reo  word  for  everyone  does  assist  in  the  way  in  which  we  create  a  non-binary  approach  to  our 
language, we would like to suggest also the use also of the work hāpu in section (c) and (h) and the addition 
also of the word pēpi. 
 
c. The kahu pōkai | midwife values mātauranga Māori and other worldviews to provide safe kahu pōkai | 
midwifery care that promotes hāpu whānau health and wellbeing and their pēpi. 
 
h. The kahu pōkai | midwife develops the knowledge, skills and cultural expertise to be responsive to meeting 
the varied health needs of hāpu whānau and/or their pēpi. The kahu pōkai | midwife may expand tikanga 
ako/midwifery practice by undertaking relevant education and gaining expertise, including in wider sexual 
and reproductive health and infant health care. 
 
Thank you for considering these additional descriptors whilst the evolution of our understanding of Te Reo 
advances as a society.
