Hi Damien,
I have had a chat with Air NZ just to get their take on this. Their advice is that they do not want
the ear bud cases in checked baggage. One of their main concerns was that if they are allowed
through the door is open to other lithium batteries and drawing a distinction is difficult. I also
had a look online to try and determine if there are any safety issues and I did find one earbud
manufacturer who had recalled their product due to overheating.
I think if AVSEC want to go down this track, it would be best if you liaised with Air NZ first, (and
the other airlines), to see if they would consider supporting your position, and if that support is
forthcoming then we could consider an exemption.
