Thank you for your email of 10 November 2022, asking for the following which has been
considered under the Official Information Act 1982 (the Act):
“I request a copy of the following geographical boundaries for your locality plan (that
Tauranga sits within) geographical boundaries for your locality plan (that Whakatane sits
within)”.
As outlined in the Pae Ora Act, by July 2024, every community in Aotearoa will be part of a
locality. Localities are bounded geographic areas that have been determined through
consultation and engagement with the community. The exact geographic size, and
population of a locality will vary across the country. Locality boundaries will be determined
with communities, mana whenua and local authorities, taking into consideration service
delivery coverage areas and natural patient flows; Iwi Māori Partnership Board areas and
iwi rohe; local government boundaries; natural communities and population size. Once a
locality’s boundary is determined, the local stakeholders will be supported to establish
local working arrangements that support integrated care and collective action.
Currently there are 12 prototype localities across the country, which are focused on
building and testing the future of the locality approach. These are:
• Taikorihi (Te Hiku o Te Ika)
• Le Afio’aga o Aotearoa (Ōtara/Papatoetoe)
• Te Tara o Te Whai (Hauraki)
• Eastern Bay of Plenty
• Te Tairāwhiti
• Pae Ora ki Tūwharetoa (Taupō/Turangi)
• Tihei Wairoa (Wairoa)
• Te Hononga (Whanganui)
• Horowhenua
• Porirua
• Takiwā Poutini (West Coast); and
• Hokonui.
Whakatāne is included within the Eastern Bay of Plenty locality boundary, which is
provisional for the purposes of prototyping the localities approach. The locality boundaries
for Tauranga and Whakatāne are still to be confirmed as part of the national locality
boundary determination process.
