Thank you for your Official Information Act 1982 (OIA) request dated 19 August
2022, in which you requested:
I would like to know if there has ever been any circumstances where a
member of parliament, including prime minister Jacinda Ardern has ever
asked the police to drop charges or drop an investigation against friends
or family members including spouse or de facto.
I can advise Police has not identified any instance of the Prime Minister, Hon
Jacinda Ardern, asking Police to drop charges/investigations. This part of your
request is therefore refused pursuant to s18(e) of the OIA, as the information
requested does not exist.
The remainder of your request is also declined pursuant to s18(e) of the OIA as
the document alleged to contain the information requested does not exist or
cannot be found. Police considers it unlikely there has ever been such a
circumstance as you describe. I can also advise, per s16 of the Policing Act
2008, the Commissioner is not responsible to, and must act independently of,
any Minister of the Crown (including any person acting on the instruction of a
Minister of the Crown) regarding the investigation and prosecution of offences.
You have the right to ask the Ombudsman to review my decision if you are not
satisfied with this response.
