By email: [FYI request #20125 email]
I refer to your information request dated 4 August 2022 made under the Official Information Act 1982
(the Act). You have requested mark distributions for the CLAS108, CLAS109, CLAS238, CLAS241,
CLAS242, CLAS337, CLAS341, CLAS342, CLAS330 and CLAS346 papers from 2018 – 2022.
Subject to the following comments, please find attached the information you have requested. Please
note that there are five sheets in the attached document (one for each year).
• please note that not all papers were offered each year, therefore we have only provided mark
distributions for the years that the papers were offered:
o 2018: CLAS341, CLAS342 and CLAS346 were not offered
o 2019: CLAS337 and CLAS346 were not offered
o 2020: CLAS341, CLAS342 and CLAS346 were not offered
o 2021: CLAS330 and CLAS337 were not offered
o 2022: CLAS330, CLAS341 and CLAS342 are not offered
• we also note that CLAS242 in 2022 is a Semester Two paper, and CLAS346 in 2022 is a Pre-
Christmas Summer School paper. Accordingly, we decline providing the 2022 mark breakdowns
for these papers pursuant to section 18(e) of the Act, on the basis that the information
requested does not exist.
• on occasions were fewer than five students have failed a paper (i.e. received a grade of FD or
FE), we have determined that it is necessary to withhold the marks and specific grades for these
students to protect their privacy and wellbeing. This is consistent with section 9(2)(a) of the Act.
We consider that withholding this information is necessary to protect against the identity of
these students being determined or inferred, and their personal information (i.e. their marks)
could be disclosed. We consider that good reasons exist for withholding this information and
this is not outweighed by other considerations which would make it desirable, in the public
interest, to make the information available.
• Students who withdrew from the papers or received an Aegrotat Pass (not a mark), are
excluded from the data.
If you are not satisfied with our response to your information request, section 28(3) of the Act provides
you with the right to ask an Ombudsman to investigate and review this response. However, we would
welcome the opportunity to discuss any concerns with you first.
