The United Kingdom have requested this call to thank you
for New Zealand’s support to Ukraine. This is an
opportunity to acknowledge the United Kingdom’s
leadership in responding to the Ukraine crisis, which has

helped New Zealand contribute to the international
community’s response.

Biography
James Heappey was appointed as Minister for the Armed
Forces in 2020, and previously served as the Minister for
Defence Procurement. Before entering politics, James
served in the Army reaching the rank of Major. He served on operations in Kabul,
Northern Ireland, Basra, Kenya and across the United Kingdom. After his time in the
military, he served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister Boris
Johnson.

New Zealand’s contributions to Ukraine
30 personnel have deployed to the United Kingdom to help train Ukrainian
military personnel in operating L119 105mm light field guns.
We have 66 NZDF personnel across Europe, helping in the areas of logistics,
intelligence and liaison roles, and we have deployed a C-130 Hercules aircraft

Our people are integrated and working well with partners as part of the
international efforts to support Ukraine. Our specialist personnel are in high

We have also provided $15.7 million in funding for weapons, non-lethal military
equipment and commercial satellite access.
