I refer to your information request dated 15 July 2022 made under the Official Information Act. You
have requested information in relation to the number of students with an Asian ethnicity enrolled in
the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) programme.
Subject to the following comment, please see below our responses to each of your questions.
• Please note that ethnicity data held by the University of Otago is based on information that
is self-reported by students, and that students can report multiple ethnicities.
Number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who were admitted into MB ChB Part II in the
year 2016 (class of 2020 which plan to graduate in 2020)
There were 78 students admitted to Second Year Medicine (MICN201) in 2016 who self-identified as
Asian.
Number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who graduated with an MB ChB degree in the
year 2020
There were 84 students who completed the MB ChB programme in 2020 who self-identified as
Asian. Please note that this data includes all students who were eligible to graduate, and may
include students who deferred graduation.
Number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who were admitted into MB ChB Part II in the
year 2017 (class of 2021 which plan to graduate in 2021)
There were 64 students admitted to Second Year Medicine (MICN201) in 2017 who self-identified as
Asian.
Number of students, by the ethnicity ‘Asian’, who graduated with an MB ChB degree in the
year 2021
There were 67 students who completed the MB ChB programme in 2021 who self-identified as
Asian. As noted above, please note that this data includes all students who were eligible to graduate,
and may include students who deferred graduation.
