[IN CONFIDENCE]
Kia ora Joanna,
Thank you so much for your time and coming in yesterday. I am very pleased to say that the
1982
selection panel were unanimous in deciding that we would like to progress in appointing you to
this role, subject to reference checks. Congratulations – you interviewed really well and we’re
Act
immensely looking forward to working with you to build this important Centre!
Please can you send me the details of two referees, including one who is a current line manager,
supervisor or similar. I will then aim to complete these checks as soon as possible so we can
begin more detailed discussions with you and the university about making this work.
If you are okay with this, we will also let Richard Jackson know (in confidence) when we meet
with him tomorrow that we have got to this stage in appointing you alongside him. We obviously
won’t be telling any others at this stage, and will work with you and Richard in due course on
Information
how to best announce the appointments.
Congratulations once again!

Kia ora Joanna - fortunately you won’t have to wait very long at all to hear from me! I have just
today completed the reference checks and am in a position to confirm that we are very happy to
proceed with this appointment. Congratulations!
The key next step I think is to open up the discussion with you and the university about what this
practically means, in particular how we transition you into the role and what the arrangement
1982
with VUW will be in terms of their support to you and the wider Centre. We have had a similar
discussion with Richard and Otago, and are trying to aim towards a 1 March start date for him
though this would not need to be the same for you. We also need to collectively plan a public
Act
announcement.
I am out on Monday but would you have some time next week after that to meet (either in
person if you are happy to do so, or virtually) and discuss the next steps?

Kia ora Joanna,

I haven’t been able to find a time with s9(2)(a)  to complete the reference check with her yet, as
she’s proving very hard to pin down! I’ve sent her an email tonight to try again. As soon as that’s
complete we can proceed quickly with you and the university, as well as get the discussions
going with Richard.

Kia ora Andy and Julia,
I realise this is probably a very frenetic week for you and know that reference
checks can also take time to complete. I'm touching base to check whether you
can give me an update on when there might be a formal offer of employment
(assuming reference checks are okay) and we can negotiate a contract?
I'm keen to start talking to Richard Jackson as soon as possible and am also

under some pressure to let colleagues and research partners know my level of
availability in the months ahead. As well, Professor Margaret Hyland, our Vice-
Provost (Research) is eager to open discussions with you about how Victoria
University might support He Whenua Taurikura.
If it's possible to give some indication of where things are at, I'll start clearing my
Official
diary with increased vigour.
