I  refer  to  your  request  for  information  dated  7  July,  which  was  received  by  Greater  Wellington 
Regional Council (Greater Wellington) on 7 July. You have requested the following: 
“I understand that there has been a change in the cost of possum bait stations and baits since the 
beginning of the year. 
 
Please could you provide the individual cost of possum bait stations and bait packs, according to 
the prices that were in force in the period from 1 December 2021 to 31 January 2022. 
 
Please could you also advise the reason for the recent increase in prices of bait stations and baits. 
 
And please also break down the current costs of bait stations and baits.” 
 
Greater Wellington’s response follows: 
The general cost of materials across various sectors have increased due in part to supply issues, the 
rise in petrol prices as well as freight and delivery costs.  Greater Wellington only pass on increases 
as they are received from suppliers and we do try to hold freight costs as much as possible, however 
some items do need to be recovered.   
 
We also do not hold large amounts of stock so the prices can fluctuate month to month depending 
on what the supplier charges at the time of purchase. 
 
We do work with suppliers for items where we buy in bulk, such as pestoff possum  pellets (20p), 
which we buy by the ton and can then on sell to customers for $42.00 per 10kg bag whereas most 
farm stores they would retail between $90-$110.

As you can see from the table above, general possum bait and bait stations have not increased over 
the last year.  Greater Wellington occasionally supply other possum bait types that are not readily 
available to the public and are sold on a case-by-case basis.  These baits are charged at the cost we 
pay to the supplier, there is no mark-up.

Information and Meetings Act 1987.
