I refer to your information request dated 9 June 2022 made under the Official Information Act 1982 
(the Act). You have requested grade breakdowns of Surveying papers over the past five years. 
 
We note we contacted you 9 June 2022 to see whether you would be willing to clarify the scope of 
your request. In your request you asked for grade breakdowns for “all 200 level surveying papers”, 
but further along in your request you asked for “levels 100 – 400”. We note that we have not heard 
back from you. Accordingly, we have interpreted your request to be for grade breakdowns of all 200 
level Surveying papers. 
 
Subject to the below comments, please find attached the information you have requested.  
 
•  For privacy and wellbeing reasons, the University’s standard practice is not to report on 
marks which relate to fewer than 5 students. Where the numbers are very low there is a risk 
that the identity of these students could be determined/inferred, and that their personal 
information (i.e. their grades) could be revealed. We therefore withhold this information 
pursuant to section 9(2)(a) of the Act. 
 
o  Therefore, where the grade is Aegrotat, Fail D, Fail E, Fail, Failed Compulsory 
Assessment or Failed Terms, if there are fewer than 5 students per year across all 
years, we have grouped those students together. Where the grade is Aegrotat, Fail 
D, Fail E, Fail, Failed Compulsory Assessment or Failed Terms, if there are fewer than 
5 students per year across only some years, we have indicated this using “<5” 
(“fewer than 5”). 
 
•  Students who withdrew from Surveying papers are excluded from the data. 
 
•  There are some 200 level Surveying papers which are field courses, therefore they do not 
have grade results attached to the papers. These papers are SURV297, SURV298 and 
SURV299. As there are no grade breakdowns for these papers, they are not included in the 
attached spreadsheet. 
 
•  Students taking Surveying papers may be enrolled in a Bachelor of Surveying or another 
programme, for example, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science. 
 
•  Please note that a 5 mark increase was applied to all final grades for papers completed in 
Semester 1 2020.
